First book you should buy - truly the "bible" for sharepoint August 6, 2007 M. Roselius (Omaha, NE) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
At least for right now....I own all the main titles (07 Unleased, Development Unleashed, Admin Companion, Pocket consultant, Inside etc) and this is by far my most used book. One you can read cover to cover, but also go back and refer to as well.
Also one of the first books to effectively discuss site architecture, planning strategy etc. When to start a new site collection or when not to. This belongs on every admin's bookshelf. And the price is right too!
Essential reading for SharePoint administrators September 30, 2007 SharePoint Guru 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book will help you think through your deployment strategy as well as clearly explain what the features of the product are for and the best way to configure your environment. A must have!
Good overview, but lightweight in many parts October 7, 2009 Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The "Bible" series are supposed to be encyclopedic in their approach to a subject. Where the subject is too broad for a single volume, the editors typically split it into two or, worse yet, omit topics.
Here, although the series has been split into two, the resulting volume still tries to cover too much territory.
SharePoint 2007 is a fast growing platform because of its versatility. The versatility means complexity for designers and administrators.
While "Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 Bible" covers virtually every aspect of installing, designing and maintaining a SharePoint Server 2007 installation, its treatment is often reduced to a listing of steps needed to implement a specific operation. This is adequate for many, if not the majority, of tasks involved with installing and maintaining an installation, but in many cases it is not and this is where this volume fails. A little too often for my liking.
Should "SharePoint Server 2007 Bible" be part of your SharePoint Server 2007 library? A qualified yes. If you can only afford one book, then this should be it - but be prepared to do a lot of additional research on the web.

Good reference for End Users February 5, 2008 Chris Love (Willow Spring, NC) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was reccomended this book by a collegue as the only book I would need to get up to speed on MOSS. That was not a very good reccomendation. It is very weak on the setup, configuration and Share Service Provider aspects of managing a MOSS environment. It also has nothing of relevance on doing Web Parts.
What is is very strong in is end user tasks, such as building and maintaining list and document libraries. It also has some great content on customizing the envrinment and branding. The SharePoint Designer is also introduced as well.
If you are a normal office worker who is responsible for maintaining the content for your group or team, this is an excellent book. If you are a network admin or a developer this would be a good book to have, but do not expect anything very deep.
