Amazon.com Review The latest release of Novell NetWare incorporates several improvements--including a native TCP/IP stack, support for the Domain Name System (DNS), and multiprocessor capabilities--that make the network operating system more Internet-centric than ever. In Mastering NetWare 5, James Gaskin documents all aspects of this powerful package, providing NetWare administrators with a fine reference to keep on hand. The book begins by explaining how to install NetWare, giving special attention to setting up Novell Directory Services (NDS) and connecting new nodes to an established network. Then the author goes into depth on how to manage a NetWare system--he details scores of approaches for coordinating users, resources, and policies in order to yield an efficient network. Internet connectivity gets lots of space too--Gaskin shows how NetWare implements TCP/IP and how to set up both Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and DNS. You'll appreciate the "In a Hurry" boxes Gaskin has inserted into his text at frequent intervals. These boxes contain succinct, step-by-step procedures that tell how to, for instance, create a NetWare Distributed Print Services (NDPS) Broker or grant trustee rights to a volume or directory. However, there don't seem to be as many stepped procedures (or as much detailed information) for features that debuted in NetWare 5 as for capabilities that have been around awhile. --David Wall

Great literature to easily get hands-on to Netware 5 January 19, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a super-duper one-volume covering about everything in Netware 5. With guidance from this book and a small knowhow of Netware-working, you can easily setup a brand new Netware 5 network with all needed software. The book is easy to read, which make it fast to look through and detailed enough to dig deep into special matters. The book also contains a very useful glossary and the "In-a-hurry" guidances are well planned. I bought this book to upgrade a NW 3.x network, and it covers it all!
A good How-To for experienced CNE4s December 30, 1998 W. Craigmiles (Williamsburg, Virginia) I've read this book from cover to cover. I find it very helpful with it's step-by-step descriptions of various tasks dealing with NetWare 5. It is much better than the Clarke NetWare 4 and 5 books. There are some details lacking, but fundamentally, this book will be usefull long after you've read it (unlike the Clarke books). I enjoyed the style of writing and the pace was very good. Mr Gaskin managed to break the chapters into very logical parts and even broke down the subchapters very well also. This makes finding the information you need much easier.
Good overview, nice read August 9, 1999 Thanks to the author. I'd much rather READ five or six hundred pages than trudge through fewer pages of just detail. And I've successfully relied on this book to take my business from Netware 3.2 to version 5 - I know I'll need more info, but this has been a fine start.
Excellent overview but lacks detail. August 28, 1999 vette@bitstorm.net (Florida, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
James has done an excellent job of covering the new features of Netware 5. Unfortunately if you are looking for down and dirty "how to" information you will be vastly sorry. I don't recommend this book for the experienced Netware admin or engineer.
Good reference but lack of detail examples December 30, 1998 A useful reference book, the only book that I find info and explanations on installing/configuring NDPS printing.
