Product Description If you're an IT professional tasked with launching and administering SharePoint to your organization, Inside SharePoint 2007 Administration is the only book you'll need. You'll find all of the information necessary to administer SharePoint -- everything from detailed real-world installation instructions and proper backup procedures to performance optimizations and scripting help that will keep your SharePoint farm humming. The book is based 100 percent on tried-and-true experiences from actual SharePoint administrators, rather than simply theoretical ideas. The chapters are set up in a logical progression for a new deployment, starting with understanding the foundation and architecture and ending with backups and disaster recovery. All instructions for accomplishing specific tasks are contained within the text of the various chapters and include numbered steps.

Definitely put this one on your shelf May 13, 2009 Alan Dunsmore (Frederick, Md USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've read a great many IT related books on more than several subjects.
Simply as an IT book, this one is right up there at the top. From the
clarity, depth, and style; the authors have made it easy to follow, and more importantly even easier to process the valuable information that they are trying to present.
That's the review on simply the IT value of the book. As it relates to Sharepoint, again easily the best Administrator book I've read. Not that others were inferior, most simply listed, demoed, the basics of Sharepoint Administration. This books goes a lot further and really brings out more of the "insides" of Sharepoint. The chapters on
STSADM and Search alone are worth the price. Anyone moving to Sharepoint, becoming more involved in Sharepoint, or wants to start expanding on their Sharepoint experience really needs to have this book on their desk and in their laptop bag.
And one other example of how much I recommend this book. I recently attended a Sharepoint Saturday (DC) event, where I won the book. So I was lucky enough to get it for free. As much as I like it, I'm almost tempted to go out and actually buy a copy. I won't of course.
While I'm very enthusiastic about the book, I'm not stupid. :)) Plus I just got back to work after an extended period of unemployment.
But thanks to Steve, Todd, and Shane. What an excellent addition to any IT bookshelf, and great contribution to the Sharepoint community.
Extremely understandable and HELPFUL SharePoint 07 book! January 19, 2009 Josh Flory 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have never written a review for Amazon.com before, but this book has been so extremely useful and helpful to me that after I saw no one else had yet reviewed it I felt compelled to do so.
I've read through several SharePoint bible/administrator's guides, etc... prior to this book and while they were all informative, none of them have been as helpful as this book.
I realize I keep repeating that word "helpful", but that is exactly what I want when I pick up a guide to an IT product, especially one as multifaceted and complex as SharePoint 2007 (MOSS 07 and WSS 3) is.
I've been messing around with various test deployments since just after SharePoint 07 came out and always ran into various little snags, seemingly undocumented work-arounds, etc... (Those in IT of course know what I'm talking about). I kept my little list of errors, notes, and work-arounds so that I could follow that the next time I setup SharePoint or came across the same problem again.
I only wish that this book had been available then, the vast majority of those "little notes" are covered in this book.
I have NOT yet read through the entire book cover to cover, but have instead been using it as a sort of reference when I run into problems in various a
Stands out from other admin books April 21, 2009 John D. Ross (Orlando, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are several other books on the subject of SharePoint administration and this one really stands out. This book does a great job of explaining the decisions that need to get made related to architecture and then walks users through the installation and configuration of the SharePoint farm. Not only does the book explain how to do it, but also gives good advice on why to do it.
This book is a more recent title than most of the other admin books and includes a number of timely subjects such as Windows 2008 Server and SQL Server 2008, and Powershell.
I've found this book to be very helpful on more than one occasion. It wasn't the first to market, but that is a good thing. The practical wisdom throughout this book is great. Highly recommended as a part of anyone's SharePoint library.
Great Book February 6, 2009 Daniel R. Mccutchen I have a lot of the SharePoint admin books, and I have been very impressed with this book. The structure and format provide more 'real world' scenarios that help administrators determine the right way to do things.
I find that I am reaching for this book more often than my others.
An Excellent SharePoint Book! February 14, 2009 K. Gossett If you have the task of administering SharePoint farms, then this book is a must-have. It covers a vast array of useful topics to help you get your farm set up and to help keep your farm running smoothly. Even if you have been working with SharePoint 2007 since it was released, you are bound to learn new things from this excellent resource. It is so easy for a computer-related book to be dry and tedious to read, but not this book! It intersperses quirky humor and useful tips and examples with technical information. Whether you use the book as a reference guide or read it cover-to-cover, one of the best things about this book is that it is actually easy and enjoyable to read while dispensing a plethora of information.
I especially found the chapters on stsadm command-line administration and using SharePoint 2007 with Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008 to be very useful. Stsadm is a very useful tool for administering SharePoint, but unfortunately the command-line help for the tool can be somewhat lacking at times. This book fills in those missing details to help one really get the most out of stsadm. I found Windows 2008 to be a bit daunting at first. The chapter in this book on SharePoint 2007 with Windows 2008 and SQL 2008 helped me to find my way around the new UI and new functionality.
