What are the Polar Contests?

The New Zealand IPY Polar Contests (2007) are an extracurricular opportunity for secondary school students to learn and teach others about the Polar Regions in a creative way. As the next generation of polar explorers, artists, scientists and writers, your help is needed! We are looking for students in year 11 and 12 to help us develop educational resources to inspire other secondary school students to get involved in addressing the environmental issues that are threatening the Polar Regions.

This project is being run by a network of NZ young polar researchers (from undergraduate to PhD level). We will act as mentors for participating students whilst you are working on developing these educational resources.

Entries to the Polar Contests will be evaluated by a panel of polar researchers, with the first prize being a place on the Students on Ice Antarctic IPY expedition (25th December 2007 to 8th January 2008). Other prizes are to be announced. Selected entries will be published on our website, enabling these resources to inspire other young people all over the world.
